Duck United Methodist Church History

Early references indicate that religious activities were held in the rural area of Duck, which originally was a part of Currituck County, as early as 1878.

About 1917, while Duck was still part of Currituck County, a group began meeting in the schoolhouse at Duck. In 1921, after the school system was consolidated at Kitty Hawk, the schoolhouse was converted into Grace Methodist Church. At that time, Duck's membership of six was transferred to the Kitty Hawk Charge. E. J. Midgett was the first minister to the church at Duck. Carrie Whitson, mother of the late Elmo Whitson, was the first organist. Many were baptized in the Currituck Sound.

In the 1940's, Andrew Scarborough started the first Sunday School at Grace Methodist Church. A regular minister from Kitty Hawk came once a month, while services were held by lay preachers on the other Sundays.

In 1973, Willie Teague began preaching every Sunday, and the time of the service was changed from 11:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The name of the church was changed from "Grace Methodist Church" to "Duck United Methodist Church" in June of 1973.

When Kitty Hawk Church received its own pastor in June 1983, the Duck and Colington churches formed the new Outer Banks Parish. An administrative council for Duck Church was formed for the first time, and the Methodist Church at Duck returned to its early state of independence.
